What is
Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural plant extracts for the purpose of promoting health and well-being.  The natural plant extracts are what is known as essential oils.  These extracts are from the flowers, leaves, bark, roots, resins, seeds, and rinds of the plants and are obtained through either steam distillation or cold pressing processes.  Essential oils evaporate quickly (volatile) but contain a significant amount of the plant constituents, so a little goes a long way!

In addition, to essential oils, hydrosols, which are a by-product from the distillation process, may be used.  Hydrosols, also known as “flower waters” contain many of the same constituents of the essential oils, but at a lower concentration that is water-soluble.

The intent of using essential oils is to take a holistic approach to bringing the body into balance (homeostasis) so that it can repair itself in full – physically, mentally, and emotionally.
